Sound Effects Transcribed

On this page, I want to explore the magical place where sound design meets melody and rhythm. I’m going to start a repository of classic sound effects in musical notation and MIDI, along with analyses of the sound design techniques each one employs.

This collection is for educational purposes only! Hopefully, it’ll provide inspiration and guidance for anyone exploring sound design or melodic composition. Also hopefully it won’t get C&D’d.

Each sound name links to a corresponding MIDI file. Save them, feed them to some synths and samplers, and tweak them to make something new.

Absolutely all audio files are renders of my recreations, NOT recordings from the games!!

Genesis sounds will have an FM8 patch linked to them when appropriate. These patches aren’t perfect imitations, but they’re damn close. In some cases, you can get even closer by turning off FM8’s “High Resolution Mode” and working at 44.1kHz to encourage a bit of aliasing. Also, FM8’s pitch envelope section is awful, so pitch bends will be written into the MIDI files.

I plan on adding to this project frequently. Follow me on Twitter to hear about updates!
